“Spectacular setting and friendly service”

When I found out that the Grand Luang Prabang was way out of the city, I was a little disappointed. However, once I arrived and settled in, my disappointment disappeared. The hotel is charming – it might be true to say that it is a little “shabby chic”, but it is far more chic than shabby. The rooms are more than adequate, and the grounds are spectacular! It is on the banks of the mighty Mekong River and offers breathtaking views from the breakfast area. The staff are friendly and very helpful – we never had to wait more that 5 minutes to get a “tuk tuk” to take us to town. I intend to visit the charming city of Luang Prabang again and again, and I will definitely be staying at the Grand Luang Prabang again.

“A pleasant stay. Not as rough around the edges as expected”

This hotel has character. It is beautiful The grounds are beautiful. and the Mekong River views are stunning. Breakfast was good but not amazing. The staff were professional. We had no problems. The hotel is a little far from town but the free shuttle was fine. They drop you off and pick you up at the post office at the end of the night market. I'd be more than happy to return.

“Total serenity...”

This is the former residence of the last Prince and the grounds are beautiful and very well kept. The view of these grounds and the Mekong River was so relaxing and serene after leaving the frenetic activity of the hotels in Viet Nam. I laid by the pool and only heard the twittering of birds...The staff was very attentive and helpful, too.

“Real charm”

We are frequent travelers in the region and used to all kind of accomodation, from guest houses to luxury hotels.
At the Grand, we found a very special ''outmoded'' atmosphere with a definite charm, very far from the chain/design types of properties which are sometimes so cold and sterilized.
It is true that some amenities are a bit outdated and or ''cheapy''(lamps, shampoos, sliding doors etc..), but it is well compensated by the stunning location and amazing views from the terrace of your bedroom (1st floor).
The lobby space is particularly charming and reception staff friendly and efficient (to Lao standard, which makes it authentic!).
The reception arranged a boat for us, which conveniently picked-us- up at the hotel pier and we odered some pic-nic food from the restaurant whick was ok and conveniently packed.
We enjoyed the laid-back swimming-pool with big buffalos hanging around and great service staff there.
The breakfast was fine and a great moment to spend just admiring the view with a cup of coffee!
I agree with other reviewers that there should be more frequent shuttles available.
Finally, we do recommend this hotel for couples or familes looking for a peaceful place and lots of authenticity.

“Lao Hospitality”

I stayed at the Grand with my husband and two young children in June 2009 for 10 days and experienced wonderful Lao hospitality. The hotel room was very clean, comfortable and quiet. The manager (who I believe was Thai) was always mindful of our comforts and was so kind to move us from an already fantastic room to an even larger one. The staff were young Lao people and they were kind, honest, patient and professional. The bellhop refused our tip because Lao people were not (yet) used to the tipping system. They were proud and gentle people, with a ready smile. Prince Pethsarath's house on the hotel ground is a museum. Hotel guests can enter without charge. It is well worth a visit. My family fell in love with the swimming pool, which was clean and located in a pretty field. There was a calm pink (really!) water buffalo always grazing nearby, giving the pool such a special atmosphere. The hotel is outside of town. But since the hotel ran frequent and free shuttle van service, this was not a problem at all. I highly recommend this hotel.
