Vientiane city tour - 1 day

Map

Operation : Daily departure
Duration : 1 day
Tour route : Vientiane city tour
Brief description : Explore Laos' capital city by bike or car to discover the hidden charms of this quiet city. Visit magnificent ancient temples, stop at the unique Patuxai Monument, and travel out to the gold-covered stupa of That Luang. Feast on fresh Lao cuisine at a charity restaurant and learn about the locally grown coffee at a tasting session. End your day with a stroll along the Mekong River as the sun begins to set.

AM: Visit Vat Sisaket, the oldest original temple in Vientiane. Built in 1818, Vat Sisaket is the sole survivor of an invasion in 1828. Vat Sisaket features remarkable frescoes and 6,840 Buddha images. Nearby is Ho Phra Keo, once the royal temple of Lao monarchy. Built in 1565, Ho Phra Keo has been used as a museum since 1970 and contains some of the finest Buddhist sculptures and artifacts in the country. The main structure originally housed the famous Emerald Buddha that now resides in Bangkok’s Wat Phra Keo.

One of the most photographed images of Vientiane is Patousay, the victory gate also known as Anousavari. Constructed in 1958, its architecture is inspired by the Arc of Triumph in Paris. Another famous Vientiane landmark is the That Luang Stupa. King Setthathirath built this great sacred stupa in 1566. Its central structure is 45 meters tall and echoes the curving lines of an elongated lotus. The original stupa was said to contain relics of Lord Buddha.
Continue to visit the Morning Market (Talaat Sao), known for its superior silk weaving, metal work, and woodcarving.

PM: After lunch at Kou Lao Restaurant, visit the surroundings of Vientiane including the Buddha Park, located 24 km south of Vientiane, and take a look at the impressive Friendship Bridge. Return to Vientiane and visit the weaving village of Ban Nong Bouathong. Stroll along the banks of the Mekong River at sunset.

Tours highlight :

Vientiane is the capital of Laos, and it is a pleasant and quiet city, located in a bend of the Mekong river. There is not much traffic, although this is quickly changing.

Many of the old French buildings that once stood in the city, have decayed or have been destroyed. Still there is quite a lot of colonial architecture to be seen here. Furthermore, the city features many temples and other sights.

Parallel to the Mekong, runs a boulevard, a good place for a walk. There are many open air restaurants here, catering cheap and good food and drinks. This is also the best place to enjoy the sunset above the Mekong.

The main attractions of Vientiane are the many Buddhist temples, like Wat Si Muang, Wat Si Saket and That Luang. Remarkable is also the Patuxai, de Lao version of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Just three kilometres outside the city lies the Wattay International Airport.

Traveller’s comments - Impress Travel

Good Morning Tony, so very nice to hear from you again.

I received lots of emails from Kate during their holiday in Vietnam and can assure you that they had a truly wonderful trip and enjoyed it as much as we did.

They were very grateful that we had recommended Impress Travel to them.

They have not yet returned to Tasmania as they are spending some time in South Australia with their daughter, but we have spoken to them with regard to catching up with them shortly after their return.

We definitely hope to return to Vietnam in the future and would like to bring some more friends when we do.

I think I mentioned previously that our youngest son is getting married next February, so next year we will need to assist financially with that, but hopefully in 2012.

I couldn’t convince my son and his fiancée to come to Vietnam for their honeymoon, they have settled on Langkawi, but I am sure they will get to your country one day.

They love to travel very much.

We have received nice emails from Thoi and Cindy (our guides in Hoi An and Hanoi) which is really good.

From our trip, there is not a thing you need to improve, I will mention to Kate and Peter that you would appreciate their feedback as well on their tour.

It is the first day of spring here today and hopefully the weather will begin to warm up.  We took our grandchildren up the mountains to the snow last weekend which was beautiful, but I long for some warmer days.

Thankyou for your email again, I appreciate you keeping in touch, be assured we will continue to recommend your travel agency to any other friends wishing to tour Vietnam.

Kind Regards,

Janeece Cook,

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your email. Sorry I have been slow getting back to you, but since returning home we have been busy (as you can imagine). Both Peter and I are back at work now, but we feel very refreshed and revitalised from our fantastic holiday. We loved everything we saw. The highlights for me were the Mekong Delta, Hoi An and Sapa.

If we had the good fortune to return to Vietnam we would like to do a homestay either in the Mekong Delta or Sapa. We absolutely loved those areas and could easily have spent more time there. We also liked Nha Trang and would liked to have stayed there for another day too.

It was just wonderful to have a guide and driver meet us at the airport and drive us around to the various attractions.

I have enclosed a photo of you and Peter taken in Hanoi.

Thank you once again Tony. We very much appreciate what you have done for us while we were in Vietnam.

Kind regards,

Kate and Peter

Dear Ms Yen,

I wish to thank you for your help in organising our stay in Hanoi and our cruise aboard the Victory Star at the beginning of March this year. Your service was excellent and the cruise was really memorable. Once again, thank you. Best wishes, John Lindon.

Dear Mr. Tony Nam,

we would like to THANK YOU very much for your help and organisation of our holiday in Vietnam. We had a FANTASTIC time in your country.

Highlights for us were Halong bay , Cuchi Tunnel and Mekong Delta. The Tour guides and drivers you supplied were fantastic, please pass on our thanks to them also.

Deb had a great birthday in Nha Trang, when we arrived back to our room that night and there was a Birthday cake waiting for us. Much appreciated if you had anything to do with this.

Once again THANK YOU.  Your service and follow up is excellent.

We hope you are well and look forward to meeting with you again.

Cheers.

Regards,

Peter and Debra Nickolai.

P.S. I also passed your details onto a lady we met on our way home in Darwin. She is travelling to Vietnam soon and would like some help and information.

 Dear Ms Trang,

Sorry that I can only read your mail when the trip is over and of course, we cannot make any change.  However, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to your help and arrangements.  The car was nice and the driver was good.  The tour guide was good too and he was able to bring us to all sight-seeing spots as scheduled though we didn't allow too much time for him.  The lunch, arranged by you, was particularly outstanding.  All of our members were pleased with the tour and gained a lot of information about Ho Chih Ming City.  Surely, I would recommend your agency to my friends if they are going to visit Vietnam.

Hope to visit Vietnam again and enjoy your service in the near future,

Szeto
